People have been surfing in Cabo since the ’50s, but it became a hot spot starting in the 80’s. March to November is the best time for Cabo surfing.

Where to Surf in Cabo

Costa Azul is home to “the Rock” and Zippers. They are a great challenge for intermediate surfers and experts. From Mid March – November the area has long quick waves.  They are viewed as the best waves in area.  The area can be access below the Costa Azul bridge at km 28.5.

  • The Rock, or La Roca, breaks to the right and provides a slow ride.
  • Zippers breaks to the right and is quite popular due to the fast fun ride it provides.

Acapulquito has long-ride waves and are great for long boarders or begininers. It is a smooth right break that comes up to the rocky shore bottom.  Be careful getting in and out of the water. It is located at km 28 in the Tourist Corridor, across from the Querencia golf course. There are “Beach Access” signs to guide you to the beach.

Monumento is a powerful left that is good for experts. The waves at Monumento can reach over 7 feet. The bottom is rocky with sea urchins, so Cabo surf lovers should be extra careful.  It is located at km 6.5 of the Corridor, closer to Cabo San Lucas.

Nine Palms offers long rights. This Cabo surfing spot is located on the East Cape. It’s approximately 30km from San Jose del Cabo.

 

Los Cerritos breaks left to right and is excellent for beginngers.  is located on the Pacific side of Cabo. It is located km 65 of the hwy that connects Cabo and Todos Santos. It is an extensive beach. The best time to hit up this Cabo surf spot is November through April.

La Bocana,  and El Tule (breaks both ways, for expert surfers) are other areas that are popular with the Cabo surfing crowds.

If you are looking to surf on the Pacific side, an hour drive to Pescadero and Todos Santos can be a rewarding surfing adventure.

The Cabo Surf Shop is located at the Cabo Surf Hotel right on Playa Acapulqito.

The Costa Azul Surf Shop also by Costa Azul has a great line of Cabo surfing clothing. These are great to bring home as gifts.

 

Cabo Surf Lessons

The Cabo Surf Hotel is also home to the Mike Doyle Surf School (Mike Doyle was a legendary surfer during the 1960s). Here you can arrange to get private lessons for $95 an hour and group surf lessons are $70 per person. Lessons include board rental.

The Costa Azul Surf Shop offers group lessons for $85 per person and the lessons last 2 hours.

Cabo Surf Board Rentals

The cost of bringing your surfboard along can be expensive. If you are looking to rent a surfboard in Cabo, here are a few places.

The Cabo Surf Shop & Mike Doyle Surf School located inside the Cabo Surf Hotel (858 964 5146) by Playa Acapulquito has boards for rent.

The Costa Azul Surf Shop rents boards for $20 per day. If you are renting for more than 10 days, the cost is $15 a day. They have short boards, hybrids, long boards and more.
